Cottbus Film Festival, Grand Prix - Vinko Bresan Though one of the first movies to take a humorous approach to the violent break-up of Yugoslavia, this motion picture is partly based on real events that took place in September of 1991. A few months after Croatia seceded from Yugoslavia, Yugoslav military installations still hold previously recruited Croatian men inside. One such installation is a garrison on a small island, commanded by Major Aleksa Milosavljevic. Besieged by local militia, Major Aleksa threatens to blow up ammunition depots with half the island in the event of any hostile action. During the stalemate, art historian Blaz Gajski comes from Zagreb, hoping to rescue his son from the barracks. |

ON GROUNDHOG'S DAY EVE, BRING YOUR TRUE LOVE TO THE PIONEER TO SEE GROUNDHOG DAY! Once again, for the fifth year in a row, TV weatherman Phil Connors (Bill Murray) is forced to cover the Groundhog Day ceremonies in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, an assignment he truly despises. But this year something truly bizarre happens after he finishes the report: When he wakes up the next morning, ready to leave, he discovers it's February 2 all over again. He tries to tell his producer, Rita (Andie MacDowell), what's happening, but neither she nor anyone else understands; only he remembers that they've already lived through Groundhog Day. When the same thing happens the next morning, he thinks he's going insane and wreaks havoc all through the town. More and more mornings pass, all of them February 2, and all of them with an ever angrier Phil. Desperate to escape, he even tries suicide, but still another February 2 dawns. As he starts realizing that his exploits are not making time march on any quicker, Phil begins to change his behavior, performing a series of lifesaving tasks until he becomes a model citizen, hoping it will be enough to get him out of Punxsutawney forever. Along the way he learns more about the people around him--and himself--than he ever thought possible. The film is extremely well put together by director Harold Ramis, and the script by Danny Rubin and Ramis is sharp and clever. The actors--many of whom have to perform essentially the same scene over and over again, with only subtle differences--is a riot. A landmark in film history, EASY RIDER blew the studio doors open for more young directors than any film before or since, helping to create the wide-open climate that would lead to the production of many outstanding films in the 1970s. As its director, Dennis Hopper is usually given the lion's share of credit for the film's success, but the revelations of time suggest that the contributions of the late Terry Southern and, to some degree, Jack Nicholson have endowed the film with much of its residual power. Starring
Peter Fonda as Wyatt (alias Captain America) and Hopper as Billy, it traces
the hippie duo's adventures as they mount their seriously chopped hogs
on a journey to find the real America en route to Mardi Gras. In Arizona,
they visit a commune whose members are having a tough time, and in a small
Texas town they're jailed for joining a parade. But they're quickly sprung
by an ACLU lawyer, the quirky, hard-drinking George Hanson (Jack Nicholson),
who accepts their offer to join them on the trip to New Orleans, eager
to visit the best whorehouse in the South. EASY RIDER accurately reflects
the tensions and hostilities of the period, Laszlo Kovacs's photography
is superb, Nicholson is exceptional in his breakthrough role--and the
startling, stunning ending is a shocker. |

But the film doesn't advocate violence; rather, it shows the pernicious effects of violence. The film opens with ferocious energy as frenetically edited archival footage thrusts us into a raging crowd of protesters, waiting for President Bush's procession. The President is portrayed as a sympathetic and likable man-beloved by those close to him and charming to his followers. As the President gives a patriotic speech inside a hotel, the demonstrators' fury increases to the breaking point. The tension mounts until the horrible instant where the President is assassinated. After the assassination, the film shifts into the style of a mystery, and follows the FBI's hunt for the assassin. All the suspects are interviewed except one-the Syrian man who is convicted and put on death row. There is much circumstantial evidence against him. But is he guilty of the crime? Or does his Middle Eastern origin provide a convenient excuse to label the death of the President as an Act of Terror? Director Gabriel Range previously used the device of a "retrospective documentary" in his celebrated 2003 film "The Day Britain Stopped," about a chain of events that led to a breakdown of the country's transport system and nearly a hundred fatalities. Both of these films have been acclaimed for the technical virtuosity with which they combine archival footage and filmed scenes to create disturbingly real visions of catastrophes. One
of the most acclaimed - and romantic - films of recent years ETERNAL SUNSHINE
OF THE SPOTLESS MIND is an unconventional romance told in the abstract,
inventive, and comedic storytelling style of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman.
Like his scripts for ADAPTATION and BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, this plot works
off of a relatively complex idea that is easier explained through language
of film than through words. In its most basic description, Joel (Jim Carrey)
is undergoing a medical procedure to erase the memory of his ex-girlfriend,
Clementine (Kate Winslet). However, while he is unconscious and the procedure
is underway, he takes a journey through his mind, reliving moments with
Clementine for fear of losing her forever. Using disjointed sound and
action, foggy periods indicating Joel's confusion, and flashbacks to childhood
where objects appear much bigger than they are to adult eyes, the cinematography
communicates Joel's dilemma with visual hilarity. Only occasionally is
the film laugh-out-loud funny; instead it is much more deeply and darkly
amusing as the absurdity of the situation grows. ETERNAL SUNSHINE is nothing
short of brilliant--a credit to director Michel Gondry (who has a topnotch
reputation for his aesthetic music videos by artists such as Bjork). Carrey
is wonderfully understated in the role of a simpleminded nice guy, and
his signature goofiness is used only a handful of times. Winslet lights
up the screen with her blue hair and orange sweatshirt, playing a lively
free spirit and loose cannon. There are also strong supporting performances
by Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, and Mark Ruffalo, along with an excellent
score by Jon Brion and a peppy soundtrack including songs by E.L.O. and
The Polyphonic Spree. The film's conclusion promises to satisfy viewers;
it offers a beautiful metaphor for the end of a love affair that brings

SANTO DOMINGO BLUES is a feature-length documentary that tells the story of the guitar-playing, singer songwriter Luis Vargas and Bachata, the guitar blues of Santo Domingo. Born in the bars and brothels of the Dominican Republic, Bachata is now eclipsing rap as the music of choice for Latino youth on the streets of New York and has become an emblem of national pride for Dominican immigrants. This movie documents why Bachata, known originally as the “Song Of Bitterness”, was, and still is, so important to the waves of impoverished immigrants that pour into American cities from the Dominican Republic. It was the anthem of the hard drinking, womanising, down on his luck man, vilified as the entertainment of the brothels, but worshipped by the poor as their authentic music. Today Bachata is heard on the radio throughout the Americas from New York to Buenos Aires and rivals Merengue and Salsa as the preferred music of the Latin American world. With exclusive interviews with stars and pioneers of the genre and scenes involving live performances on and off stage, SANTO DOMINGO BLUES brings to life the triumph of a poor peopleís music over censorship and prejudice. |

ARM BITA HAIDARIAN is an Iranian American filmmaker that grew up in Texas to Baha'i refugee parents. Her first two student films The Arm and Virgin 72 went on to win multiple awards film festivals around the world. Fresh out of film school, Bita is currently working on Finding Bibi her first feature length documentary. Bita takes her youthful irreverence and young vantage point of a woman of both east and west sets out on an around the world journey to tell a story all about the east and the west finding common ground through the stories of women.
